Shibuya Crossing

Today was my first full day in Tokyo, Japan. My first day in any new city is a bit weird. In a way, I don't want to be there, but at the same time I am eager to get out and see the town. I left my hotel with a specific goal in mind: Find the Tower Records near Shibuya Crossing so I could get a guide book to the city in English. Apparently their 7th floor is English books, but it was harder to find than I expected. I ended up walking the streets of this part of town for about an hour searching for the place. At some point I figured it had shut down, and then a minute later it appeared right in front of me. So I was able to get my guide book and start finding my way around the town. Since I was already in the area, my first site really should be Shibuya Crossing. This is sometimes called the busiest crossing in the world. Not really sure I believe that, but it certainly got busier about 20 minutes after this set of shots. But only 30 seconds after the 5th photo, the attendant at the Starbucks told me "no photo". I was a bit surprised since pretty much every other person in the place had their camera out, but mine was the only SLR. I managed to get about 30-40 others from my little Canon point & shoot, plus 20 minutes of video of crossings. Since nobody crosses on a red light, the burst of people onto the road at specific intervals is quite amazing to watch.

Going to Sea

One of the main purposes for my last trip to Seattle was to go on a weekend cruise with a friend from Microsoft and a large group of his friends and family. We left from Seattle and went up to Victoria and Nanaimo. It was a great trip. To get to the cruise I had to take the ferry from Bainbridge Island where my parents live. On the way over, I saw the boat I was going to be sailing on waiting at the port.  It was wonderful finally being able to take one of these ships rather than just watching them leave.

This is a 3 image handheld HDR. It was processed in Photomatix, then tweaked with Topaz Adjust and Topaz DeNoise.

At least the dog cared about me

One early morning I went out to Dhurbar Square in Kathmandu to see the place before too many people arrived. That plan didn't work because there were swarms of people already there. Behind the main square I found an interesting mini market area. I set up to do a large panorama, but this was a quick HDR I did just in case the panorama didn't work out. I haven't gotten around to trying the pano yet. But I stood there from a good hour, taking photos. And no one noticed me. I don't go to places expecting an audience, but when someone who obviously looks different (color, weight, height, etc), I notice them and wonder what they are doing. Well, at least the dog cared about me.

Bangkok Sunset

Wow, the Shangri-la in Bangkok is a wonderful hotel. And the Krungthep Wing of the hotel is just a bit more special. It costs a few dollars more, but you get so much more included: breakfast, tea, private pool with free drinks, butler service, and of course a balcony. The balconies are so spectacular that I wanted to find a way to record what I was seeing at sunset. Due to the range of light at the same instant, along with the traffic on the river below, a long exposure HDR seemed perfect.

This is a 5 image HDR with most of the exposures in the 10-60 second range. There is no masking in of specific areas or use of other filters.

The Trolley's Coming

The Fourth Avenue district of Tucson still has a running trolley car system. I don't know where it goes, since I have only walked past it, but its quite picturesque.

According to a comment from hotdamy2k on the Flickr page for this:

Right now it runs from the University Main Gate, down University to 4th, and now through the rebuilt underpass into downtown. The tracks are supposed to go all the way to the Rio Nuevo development, but that's gotten to be a really sore point around here...Rio No Va, as they say.

The trolley on 4th has actually only been in operation for a bit over fourteen years. The original trolley system shut down in 1931 and went down Stone, not 4th.
